Sam is an English teacher you talk to by voice. This page says exactly what data it uses, where it lives and what you can do about it.
In short: no ads and no selling of data. Your voice is used in the moment for the conversation and is never stored on any server. The only thing kept is the audio of your sentences, on your own phone for 7 days, so you can hear "Your version". Sam keeps what it learns about you (your level, your goals, your mistakes and your talk summaries) in your account, and you can delete it from the app at any time.
What we store
| What | Why | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Your account: the identifier from Sign in with Apple. We don't ask for your name or email. | So your progress doesn't depend on your phone | Supabase (US) |
| Your goal, topics and the area you want to practice | Planning each class | Supabase |
| Your progress: map goals, recurring mistakes and each talk's summary ("What I noticed"), which may quote you | Tracking your progress and picking the next class | Supabase |
| Usage log: date, length and cost of each talk, without its content | Your plan's limits and cost control | Sam's server (Hetzner, Germany) |
| The audio of what you said in each talk | "Your version": hearing your sentence next to the American one in "What I noticed" | Only on your phone, 7 days |
| A random phone identifier | Moving what you did before signing in to your account | Sam's server and Supabase |
| Your notification token and the times you want them | So Sam can write to you, only if you allow it | Sam's server and Supabase |
| Proof of your subscription (not your payment details) | Knowing whether your plan is active | Supabase |
| Crash and usage reports (which screens open, whether the app crashes) | Fixing the app and knowing what's used | Google Firebase (US) |
Your voice and what you say
During a talk, microphone audio travels encrypted to our server and from there to OpenAI, which generates Sam's reply in real time. We never store audio on our servers. OpenAI processes this data through its API: it doesn't use it to train models and may retain it for up to 30 days to prevent abuse.
The text of what was said is used at the end of the talk to build "What I noticed" and update your progress, and is then discarded. What remains is the summary and your progress.
On your phone, the app keeps the audio of what you said in each talk so that in "What I noticed" you can hear your sentence next to the American version. That audio never leaves your phone and is deleted automatically after 7 days, when you sign out or when you delete your account.
Who we share data with
Only the providers that make Sam work, and only what they need: OpenAI (voice and talk analysis), Supabase (your account and progress), Hetzner (Sam's server), Google Firebase (crash and usage reports) and Apple (sign-in, payments and notifications). We don't sell data, there are no ads and no cross-app tracking.
Your choices
- Delete everything: in the app, "What I know about you" → "Delete my account". Your account and everything Sam knows about you are deleted immediately. The usage log (dates and lengths, no content) is left unlinked from any account.
- Usage reports: turn them off in "What I know about you".
- Notifications: control them in "What I know about you" and in iPhone Settings.
- Corrections: edit your goal, topics and priority in "What I know about you".
Age
Sam is for people 13 and older. Users under 18 need permission from a parent or guardian.
